As we begin 2026, Foothills Community Foundation is reflecting on a year defined by momentum, measurable impact, and continued trust from donors across our region. The numbers tell a compelling story—one of growth, stewardship, and deepening community investment.

A Year of Significant Grantmaking

During the last fiscal year (July 1, 2024–June 30, 2025), Foothills Community Foundation awarded $6.56 million in grants to nonprofits serving our communities. That pace has continued into the current fiscal year, with $6.0 million granted between July 1 and December 31, 2025 alone.

These figures reflect more than transactions—they represent food on tables, scholarships awarded, programs sustained, and lives strengthened across Anderson, Oconee and Pickens Counties and the surrounding region.

Growth Since Inception

Since its founding in 1999, the Foundation has now distributed more than $42.8 million in grants, growing from an initial $42,000 in its earliest year to a philanthropic institution with enduring reach and influence. This long-term growth underscores the power of collective generosity paired with thoughtful stewardship.

Year-End Giving with Real Results

The final two months of 2025 alone accounted for nearly $3.93 million in grants, demonstrating how year-end giving—when paired with donor-advised funds, designated funds, scholarships, and field-of-interest funds—can translate quickly into community benefit.

Planning Ahead: Turning Strategy into Impact

The first quarter of 2026 reflects both momentum and meaningful impact at Foothills Community Foundation. From expanded opportunities for donors to continued growth in community giving, the year is off to a powerful start.

Strengthening Philanthropy Through Smart Giving

One of the most impactful updates this quarter is a reduction in Donor Advised Fund (DAF) fees. For funds under $1 million, fees have been lowered from 1.5% to 1.0% annually, with even lower rates for larger funds. This change ensures that more dollars go directly toward the charitable causes our fundholders care about most.

For individuals and families considering their charitable legacy or current giving strategies, this presents an opportunity to maximize both philanthropic impact and financial planning.

A Year of Growth and Generosity

The Foundation’s 2025 results highlight the strength of our community:

  • 19 new funds established
  • 806 grants distributed
  • $7.8+ million in grants awarded
  • $20+ million in contributions received

These numbers represent more than growth—they reflect trust, generosity, and a shared commitment to improving lives across our region.

Honoring a Legacy of Service

This quarter, we are proud to recognize John M. Greene as the 2025 recipient of the Robert M. Rainey Philanthropist Award.

John’s connection to Foothills Community Foundation spans its earliest days. Alongside his late wife, Sue Greene—one of the Foundation’s first Board members and a former Chair—John helped shape the organization’s vision and long-term success. Their daughter, Dr. Theresa Knoepp, continued that legacy, making the Greene family uniquely influential in FCF’s history.

Though often working behind the scenes, John’s leadership on the Finance and Investment Committee helped ensure the Foundation’s sustainability and stewardship. His professional accomplishments as a CPA and national leader further reflect a lifelong commitment to service.

His recognition is not just a celebration of individual achievement, but a testament to the lasting impact of thoughtful, community-centered philanthropy.
