Dr. Marshall L. Meadors, III Dog Park

WHY A
DOG PARK?

Dr. Marshall L. Meadors, III believed downtown Anderson needed a space where people and pets could gather. Even before he had dogs of his own—South Main and Ellie—he recognized the importance of a park that built both community and connection.

Known for always helping the “underdogs,” Marshall championed causes that uplifted both people and pets. The dog park reflects his vision of a stronger, more welcoming Anderson.

Help maintain the park and keep it a great place for years to come!

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

Eleanor Roosevelt

When plans for Anderson’s first dog park were taking shape, many people asked Dr. Marshall Meadors the same question: “Why a dog park? You don’t even have a dog.”

Marshall believed the project mattered. He recognized that as more people moved into downtown Anderson, families would need safe, welcoming spaces where their pets could play, and neighbors could connect. To him, the dog park was more than just a fence and some grass—it was community-building in action.

Though he didn’t have a dog at the time, Marshall’s love for animals had deep roots. As a child, he grew up with his dog Wags, and later in life he adopted South Main and Ellie, both before the park officially opened. His wife, Jennifer Brown Meadors, reflects that “Marshall always stepped up to help the underdogs—even the real dogs—and he always advocated for people in need.”

The dog park project reflected this spirit. Marshall gave his time and leadership to turn the idea into reality, seeing it as one more way to strengthen the fabric of Anderson. His vision came to life in July 2017 when the gates first opened at 415 N. Fant Street.

About Dr. Meadors

Marshall LeRoy Meadors III was born August 31, 1957, in Atlanta, GA. He was the son of the late Hannah Campbell Meadors and Bishop Marshall L. “Jack” Meadors Jr.  He moved to Anderson in the ninth grade, attended T.L. Hanna High School, then Wofford College, earning a B.S. in 1979. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his residency at AnMed Health’s Family Practice Residency Program.

A board-certified family medicine physician, Dr. Meadors went on to become a founding partner at Primary Care Associates in Anderson and served as Medical Director of NHC Anderson.

Beyond medicine, Marshall touched nearly every corner of Anderson—supporting nonprofits, guiding community initiatives, and giving his voice and time wherever it was needed. It is hard to imagine Anderson without Marshall—his influence touched so many parts of our community. His absence is deeply felt, yet his vision continues in the places and projects he helped bring to life.

Today, the park bears his name in gratitude for his leadership, his kindness, and his belief in creating spaces where everyone—dogs included—has a place to belong.

I remember once running with Marshall downtown all the way to the Mercy Chapel and down through the old mill neighborhoods. It was a hike, and I saw areas of town I had never seen. Marshall was prone to explore and take note of these areas, A couple of weeks later he found a stray…
